McAfee Knob is the most photographed site along the Appalachian Trail. The Knob has an almost 270 degree panorama of the Catawba Valley and North Mountain to the west, Tinker Cliffs to the north and the Roanoke Valley to the east.

Daystar, Bebop, Gribley, and Lighthouse stopped at the Skyland Resort for lunch.  From its website:

Skyland Resort, located at mile 41.7 on Skyline Drive, was founded in 1888 by George Freeman Pollock Jr. Mr. Pollock, who chose the perfect spot for his summer retreat at 3,680 feet, with breathtaking views of the Shenandoah Valley and cool mountain breezes.  

The AT and Skyline drive run nearly parallel through Virginia.  After lunch, Daystar and Bebop emailed me the pics below that are from this past week.

Gill needs fresh water.

Along the trail, hikers learn interesting tidbits about each other and their families that in our digital and media-dominated world could be considered "too much information."  So it is with our little group.   Daystar and Pants on Fire discovered that the movie "What About Bob" was each of their families' favorite movie.  Pants often begins the day in his tent: "Good morning Gill, I said good morning Gill!"  And that evokes giggles from Daystar's tent.  Then they talk about baby-stepping to Maine, and to put it mildly, this drives Gribley crazy.  So, while the girls were in Target a day or so ago, "What About Bob" was in the $5.00 bin and Daystar bought it, and they watched it at the Lutheran Evangelical Hostel.  And now, they all have a prescription: to take a vacation from their problems.  Gentle readers, if you haven't seen the movie, I suggest you make time to do so.

Bebop hits triple digits

Cole has her trail name, and she has hiked one hundred miles so far.  The girls checked in last night via text message fromWaynesboro, VA.  A couple of nights ago they were at the Devil's Backbone Brewery  in Roseland, VA for a meal, libation, and ended up spending the night out back.  Just saying that I am not suprised to learn this micro-brewery is based in Lexington, VA.  I might have mentioned that Washington & Lee University is located in Lexington, VA and that there wasn't a micro-brewery back in the mid seventies, just Duck's.  Anyway the group called a number another hiker had given them and the folks at Devil's Backbone met them at a crossing and carried them to the "Base Camp" brewery in Roseland.  Macon said she had a half pound burger topped with pulled pork, onion rings on a jalapeno bun.

Because Cole just be-bops down the trail she was bestowed the trail name of Bebop.  They have picked up the pace since Trail Days and are closing in on the one thousand mile mark.

The group spent last night in the hostel run by Grace Evangelical Church.  They arrived on Wednesday which meant they enjoyed the Wednesday night supper for hikers.  Then, they split up; Lighthouse (who has joined the group) manned the laundry and the girls headed to Target.  Daystar plans to call home today so we may post more news later.
